Seattle, WA, June 8, 2009 - REI launched the Bike Your Drive mobile iPhone application, a free interactive tool that helps cyclists track, view, and share their experiences. It’s available through the Apple iPhone app store or @: www.rei.com/bikeyourdrive

Whether it’s a quick trip to the grocery store, or a long training ride with friends, the customizable application allows users to view cycling progress, pinpoint and save their mileage, upload geo-tagged photos for documentation and measure gas savings and CO2 offset. Second generation iPhone users with GPS tools can capture their bicycle experience in real-time.

“Most people carry their phone when they are outdoors, so we wanted to create a tool that was easy and fun for cyclists,” says Tom Vogl from REI. “Using GPS functionality and geo-tag capabilities, we created a application that lets you bring your friends on the ride.”

Chattanooga, TN, June 1, 2009 - Specialty outdoor retailer Rock/Creek announced a $5,000 donation for The Boonies, the latest in a string of donations stemming from the Rock/Creek Trail Series. The Boonies will use the money to help run future events as well as secure access to single track trails. These funds came from last Saturday morning’s third annual Scenic City Trail Marathon and Half Marathon. Other contributing sponsors include SmartWool, Marmot, The North Face, and Hammer Nutrition.

Threatening clouds and rain held off just long enough for the finishers to come across the line. The race took place on the trails around TVA’s Raccoon Mountain Pumped Storage Facility. Compared to 2008, the race saw 25% growth in half marathon runners and 62% growth in marathon runners.

Proceeds from both events go to The Wilderness Trail Running Association (aka The Boonies) and will be used for future trail races, trail maintenance, and sustainability efforts in the Cumberland and Southern Appalachian Mountains.

Launching today, the free program is designed for children 5 to 12 and encourages them to participate in at least one outdoor activity this year.

Families and caregivers can stop by any REI store to pick up a complimentary adventure journal, plus hike and bike trails in their local area that are recommended by expert REI employees.

After participating in at least one outdoor activity, parents can send in a postcard from the journal or visit http://www.rei.com/passport to receive a certificate of completion and a special prize for their kids. In 2008, REI engaged nearly 24,000 children in outdoor activities through Passport to Adventure.
