Outdoor Gear Price Comparisons from OutdoorGearEngine.com

Posted in Industry News on August 22nd, 2006

This was our first syndicated press release posted to PRWeb.com on July 24, 2006. It overviews the service and offers insight into what makes our gear comparison engine different from others. Enjoy!

OutdoorGearEngine.com is a robust price compare service featuring over 300,000 skus from the world’s top online outdoor gear retailers and brands. Price It, Buy It, Get Outside!

Salt Lake City, UT (PRWEB) July 24, 2006 — OutdoorGearEngine.com (OGE) displays updated pricing and shipping information for gear from top web retailers. The service was launched in the winter of 2005 with the mission of providing up-to-date pricing information on thousands of products from the most respected outdoor companies. Featured brands include DAKINE, The North Face, Marmot and Yakima.

“OGE has been built from scratch to accurately compare prices on thousands of products. It automatically scans the catalogs from our retail partners for the most recent pricing information,” says CEO Jesse Hoffman. “What differentiates OGE from other comparison sites is our focus on gear and our commitment to indexing thousands of products. We want users to find what they’re looking for quickly so they can get outside and enjoy the outdoors.”

One frustration with many comparison services is that algorithms do not classify a specific product in one succinct comparison. With OGE, the data is compiled to present one comparison page that features pricing from the retailers that carry that specific product. If a user searches for a product that has not been indexed yet, matching results are presented from the entire library of over 300,000 skus.

“I have recognized OGE’s usefulness from a shopper’s perspective, but I also use it to keep an eye on our competitor’s pricing,” explains Mark McKnight, from Rock Creek Outfitters (RockCreek.com). “Price comparisons are hot. I have been watching this site for a while and the technology keeps improving.”

Not only does OGE show product comparison data, but also provides each retail partner with a detail page where promotions are displayed. This allows users to maximize their gear dollars by using the most recent coupons and codes available for these merchants.

About OGE Inc:
OGE Inc was incorporated in August 2005 with the goal of creating the best outdoor gear comparison service on the web. OutdoorGearEngine.com is currently on version 2.0 (v2.0) of its software and anticipates the release of v3.0 in the fall. This release will include a number of improvements, including faster searches, store reviews and more. For more information or to become a retail partner please visit the About OGE page.

New Jackson Hole Tram Announced

Posted in Industry News on August 21st, 2006

Well it’s official…Jackson Hole is building a new tram. The headline for the article I just found is ‘100 passenger, state of art aerial tramway’. Here are a few details from the press release at OutdoorNewsWire.com:

TETON VILLAGE, WY.-Jackson Hole Mountain Resort officials announced today their intention to enhance the legacy created over the last 40 years by committing to build a new 100 passenger, state of the art aerial tramway from the base in Teton Village to the summit of Rendezvous Mountain, a vertical rise of 4,139’. This tram will have the longest continual vertical rise of any ski lift in North America.

Quote: “We studied many options and reduced them to a Tram or Bi-Cable Gondola. We all agreed the iconic nature of our ‘red box’ was something to be treasured but we kept options open until the final and most recent decision. Ultimately the final analysis was financial. We are a small, family owned company with finite resources. This new tram will cost an estimated $25 million and so far we have had to plan on funding the entire project privately. In conjunction with the $14 million already committed to capital improvements this summer there will be a strain felt on our company resources, but we are steadfast in this decision thanks to the commitment from our owners. On our 40th Anniversary the company has reached a pinnacle of investment,’ stated Blann.

Interesting turn of events. Small, family owned company, eh? I don’t doubt family owned by maybe ’small’ was the wrong use of a word. Greek Peak in New York state near Ithaca is small, not JHMR.

Utah Outdoor Personality Dies from Sudden Illness

Posted in Daily Grind on August 21st, 2006

If you live in Utah you knew who Doug Miller was. In fact you may have known of him where ever you live. He was one of Utah’s most well-known and respected television personalities. Mr. Miller began suffering discomfort Monday, July 31st, and passed away peacefully August 20, 2006 at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City, surrounded by his family.

Doug Miller is a legend in Utah television and radio broadcasting, best known for his weekly half-hour program Outdoors with Doug Miller on KUTV Channel 2. His deep and distinctive Arkansas twang, easy story-telling ability and infectious enthusiasm for everything outdoors have drawn viewers to their sets each Saturday night as Doug shared with his audience his latest adventure in pursuit of “wild places and wild things.”

Our Condolences go out to his family and his friends. They should all take comfort in knowing how much joy he brought to people’s lives for many years.
